The 2018 NFL season hasn’t started yet, but one promising Washington Redskins rookie suffered a season-ending injury. Running back Derrius Guice, selected 59th overall in the 2018 NFL Draft, tore his left knee ACL during the team’s first preseason game against the New England Patriots on August 9.
Guice was expected to be the Redskins’ starting running back this season. IN the same game, tight end Manasseh Garner also suffered a season-ending ACL injury. In Guice’s absence, the Redskins signed future Hall of Famer, Adrian Peterson, to a one-year contract.
Additionally, Rob Kelley is expected to be the next man up as running back. A 2016 undrafted free agent, Kelley has 898 rushing yards and 100 receiving yards through 22 career games with the Redskins. Others expected to compete for playing time at the position include Chris Thompson, Samaje Perine, and Byron Marshall. Guice, meanwhile, is expected to fully recover in time for the start of the 2019 season.
